Artist’s Statement
KQ Huang is a British Chinese artist exploring the cultural identity and heritage of the Chinese diaspora. His work incorporates traditional forms of Chinese culture such as calligraphy and opera. Using the motif of colourful Chinese opera masks, Huang represents the ‘invisible minority’ of the Chinese diaspora, as if hidden behind a mask and essentialized to all being simply ‘Chinese’. He also highlights and encourages the common inclination of many second and third generation immigrants to reconnect with the richness of their Chinese heritage.
