Artist’s Statement

“These gardens are translated from an Eastern context into a Western context and though the gardens are made in good faith, the interactions they carry are innately different from the interactions of the original context.”

Biography

Kevin Yatsu makes video art and feature screenplays that explore the nuances of his Japanese-American identity. Intimate and imperfect, his works are most comfortable in relation to the Eastern framework of Zen Buddhism. The work has taken many previous forms including zines, paintings, web design, performances, and gallery installations. Kevin currently lives in Eugene, Oregon, where he is an MFA Candidate and Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon.
