Cultural Identity

RELATION TO THE THEME - FAMILY

This mixed media piece consists of red envelopes and acrylic paint. The overarching theme is how my identity is connected to my family history. I believe that family is not only limited to blood connection but the interpersonal connections you make with close friends and partners. That said, I have wanted to show how each red pocket was given to me by a family member from Canada or China. Adding on, I painted a self-portrait on top of the envelopes to signify my connection which each family member. This piece has significance myself more than others since part of my identity is on the work that I create; This piece will resonate with many people of Asian descent.

WHAT THEY LEARNED AND INCORPORATED INTO THEIR PIECE

For this specific piece, I learned the significance of the colour red and the history of red pockets as part of my research. I also learned the history of the zodiac signs in the Chinese culture as well as the Zodiac Story- The Great Race. This was used in my piece as red pockets were the surface for my medium.
