Coloré

Art piece by Jim Tran

Artist’s Statement

Coloré (colored, in french) is a self-portrait I made with watercolor. Each lock of the hair has a different color : blue, green, purple, red, yellow, etc. And on the face, the color yellow and dark blue are used to add highlight and contrast, outlining the facial expression and adding definition.A very vibrant and saturated color palette is used since it is an effective way to express character and personality, to reflect my true colors. By incorporating them directly on myself, I intend to make the art inseparable from the artist. One of the main inspirations for the colorful hair is the well-known rainbow flag which is a symbol for the LGBTQ+ community. There is pride in showing who you are to the world, and pride is inseparable from the subject, who does not look outward for validation, but instead keeps those eyes closed while looking inward. True validation comes from within, and true colors come out only with pride.
